What does home insurance cover?

There are two types of home insurance; buildings insurance and contents insurance.
You can buy them separately or combine them into one policy, which is where joint building and contents insurance come in. This insurance helps to protect both the structure of your property and everything inside it, ensuring you’re covered against unexpected events.

Building insurance vs. contents insurance

Buildings insurance protects the physical structure of your home and anything permanently attached to it. It includes walls, floors, ceiling, roof, windows, fitted kitchens, built-in appliances, bathroom fixtures, pipes and drains. Some policies also include garages, sheds and outbuildings. If your property were damaged by fire, storm, flood, subsidence or even accidental structural damage, buildings insurance helps cover repair or rebuild costs.

Contents insurance protects the items you keep inside your home, meaning everything you could reasonably take with you if you moved. This includes furniture, soft furnishings, carpets, rugs, home appliances, electronics, clothing, personal possessions, jewellery, valuables and household items. Cover applies to you and anyone else named on the policy who lives in the home.

Contents insurance can also protect against theft, accidental damage, fire and smoke damage, flooding and electrical surges. Some policies even cover items taken outside the home, such as laptops, phones or bikes.
